Fully Custom Contracts

Just as each writer is different, we build all contracts from the ground up alongside the author so they always know what is going on and what they’re getting.

It's About Writers, Not Money

We are writers tired of Traditional Publishing. We believe that no one should give up all their rights unless they get something in return.

Sliding Royalty Rate

Industry First! Your royalty rate goes UP the better your book sells! And better yet, you’ll never earn less than 50% of the profit.

Our Mission

Steam Powered Dreams was founded on the ideals of doing the right thing for people just like us, writers! Frequently Asked Questions

What genre's are you currently accepting?

We are currently accepting queries within the Fantasy and Science Fiction genres, as well as their sub-genres.

You mention sub-genres, is there a list?

There are literally hundreds of sub-genres within the Science Fiction and Fantasy world so it would be impossible to list them all, but here are some of the more popular ones:

  • Dark Fantasy
  • Dieselpunk
  • Hard Fantasy
  • High Fantasy
  • Low Fantasy
  • Medieval Fantasy
  • Science Fantasy
  • Steampunk
  • Sword and Sorcery
  • Time Travel
  • Urban Fantasy
  • Hard Sci-Fi
  • Military Sci-Fi
  • Space Opera
  • Cyberpunk
  • Apocalyptic Sci-Fi
  • Post-Apocalyptic Sci-Fi
  • Space Western
What is the minimum wordcount to submit?

At this time we are only accepting Novellas and Novels in the 45,000-140,000 word range.

However, if you have a manuscript that is over 140,000 words, still consider submitting it, but understand that there is a good chance it would be split into a series of at least 2 books.

Do you work with Agents/Query letters?

We try to avoid working with agents and prefer working directly with the author.  This is mostly because we feel agents are an unneeded middle-man most of the time.  With that said, if you have an agent (or are one) we will still work with you, but many of the guarentees on royalty rates we provide do not apply.

As for query letters, we absolutely HATE them! We think they’re a waste of time and a large stress to writers. To make things easier, we use a Google Form that just asks you some questions and then you submit it, no big deal!  Still be sure to double and triple check your answers, as things like bad grammar or misspelled words are an instant red flag.
